The typical champagne flute is out! The delicious bubble drink would come into its own much better in a … ordinary wine glass. According to the article, a panel of connoisseurs did the test with two glasses of Laurent Perrier. One glass was a whistle, the other a glass for white wine. You probably guessed it, not the whistle but the white wine glass came out as the winner in the test.

I will tell you what I personally think of it in a moment, but first continue with the above test.

According to the experts, with a whistle glass you can only taste the bubbles and you miss the aromas, while it is completely different with a wine glass. Sounds logical because with a red wine you also enjoy the smell much more with a larger glass. On the other hand, I’ve always been told that the narrow whistle just keeps the aromas in the glass.

Riedel, an expensive German glass producer, has already found a compromise and they come up with the tulip glass. Wide in the middle and narrow at the top. In this way, the aromas are released and are still kept in the glass.

Champagne coupe glasses remain the norm for me anyway if you want to drink a nice glass of bubbles.

I want to test it because somewhere I can follow the logic. If you indeed get more enjoyment from your champagne, then I would like to join this trend, but I have serious reservations about it.

What do you think? Anyway, give it a try or will you also stick to your whistles. I’ll keep my ‘coupekes’ and my ‘whistles’ at least for the time being.

We’ll see what comes of it but as said before I don’t think this will really break through. Do you need a new set of real champagne glasses? You can buy these in the specialty store or online at a catering wholesaler.
