It’s time for the big spring cleaning – Wonen Inside

Although parts of the Netherlands were still covered in snow this week, it really is the beginning of spring this month. Crocuses and snowdrops appear here and there and the days get longer. Spring is often accompanied by fresh energy and a lot of Dutch people use this time to give their homes a major overhaul. It feels wonderful to open all the windows and freshen up the house after a long winter. If you are planning to thoroughly overhaul your home this month, read on.

Why do we like to clean the house in the spring?

The tradition of spring cleaning is partly because we used to heat homes with a fireplace or coal stove. To get through the harsh winters, the doors and windows were kept tightly closed. In this way, as little heat as possible could escape. In the spring the sun starts to shine more often and we are less dependent on heating. So we could finally air the house again in the spring. In addition, we automatically get more energy in the spring due to the sunlight. We spend more time outside and the days are longer. Finally, spring is also just a convenient season for cleaning. It is not too hot or cold as in summer or winter, nor too humid as in autumn.

It’s time for seasonal chores

Now is the time to perform seasonal kisses. Think of dusting the garden furniture and tidying up the garden. You can, among other things, tackle the terrace with the high-pressure cleaner and thoroughly clean the barbecue. This way you are prepared for long days in the garden when the weather permits. We can’t wait to drink our cup of coffee in the sun. Or maybe you like to host fun evenings with friends where you chat for hours or watch competitions and bet on sports. In any case, there is no better time to get the garden ready than spring. It is also a good idea to give your bedding a good wash in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to air your mattress and turn it over if necessary.

Work room by room

As soon as we get a cleaning urge, we prefer to open all cupboards and put all the furniture aside. However, it is wiser for your own well-being to make a plan in advance. In general, it works well if you do spring cleaning room by room. For example, you can create a checklist per room so that you don’t forget anything. This way you keep order in the house and you can make full use of the other rooms.

Organize and tidy up your home

When we clean we are always confronted with how much stuff we have. Make time this spring to tidy up your home and say goodbye to things that are of no use to you. For example, start with your wardrobe and put aside things that you hardly ever wear. You can then consider whether you want to sell, give away or donate the clothing. The more stuff you have in your house, the more you have to clean. You probably have a junk drawer in the office or kitchen that you’ve been wanting to clean up for a long time. There’s no better time than spring, so roll up your sleeves and get to work!
