The update to Android 13 is being rolled out for the Fairphone 3 and the Fairphone 3+. Both devices were updated to Android 11 last year, but that is not a problem for this update.
Fairphone 3 and 3+ with Android 13
The major update to Android 13 is being rolled out to two smartphones from the Dutch manufacturer Fairphone. The brand is rolling out the new version for the Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+. The first model appeared on the market in 2019, followed a year later by the 3+.
In May last year, the brand released the update to Android 11. According to the brand, it does not matter that the devices still run on Android 11; you can just update directly to Android 13. With Android 13 you get several improvements. Think of more privacy options and possibilities, more personalization options for Material You.
Fairphone is known for its long support for older devices. The result with the 3 and 3+ was that the chipset manufacturer no longer offered support for the smartphones, so Fairphone had to take a different tack. This now results in the update to Android 13, which will now be distributed for the two smartphones. The brand promises software support until at least August 2024 for the two devices.
Agnes Crepet, Head of Software Longevity at Fairphone gives the following response;
“At Fairphone, we care not only about our new customers, but also about our existing users. By providing Android updates for our older models, we are going against industry standards and want to make sure that Fairphone 3 owners can use their phones for longer too. As we always say, the most sustainable phone is the one you already own!”
